The local authority aims to replace over 100 council vehicles fuelled by petrol and diesel to support the borough’s shift towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly culture.

In transitioning to the use of electric vehicles to deliver key council services, local authorities will be cutting costs on fuel, as well as maintenance and leasing fees.

Cllr Shafi Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Environment and the Climate Emergency, said: ‘This investment into electric vehicles and infrastructure demonstrates our commitment to cutting emissions, improving air quality, and ensuring financial efficiency to deliver the best possible service for residents.’

‘However, this is just a first step, and we are ambitious – as a council we are working towards having a fully electric fleet supported by extensive charging infrastructure across the borough.’

The council’s introduction of new electric vehicles indicates the evolution of their cleaner and greener scheme, a strategy created with a view to reduce air pollution and promote the use of environmentally friendly fuel types across the borough.
