The contest is open to primary school pupils across the borough, with a micro scooter on offer as the prize for the winner and their school to promote active travel.

According to the council, the new sweepers are replacements for its current diesel vehicles that have reached the end of their lifespans. The move is expected to save around £6,500 in fuel costs and more than 20 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually through reduced emissions.

Designed with Bucher Municipal, the assets will join the 150 existing electric vehicles in the local authority’s fleet, supporting its environmental and climate-related goals.

Cllr Rowena Champion, Islington Council’s Executive Member for Environment, Air Quality, and Transport, said: ‘Through our work to electrify Islington’s vehicles, we’re lowering the impact of our fleet on climate change, and we’re ensuring that local people see quieter, less-polluting vehicles driving down their streets.

‘We’re excited to see the creativity of our young residents shine through in this competition. This is an opportunity for them to have a direct role in our efforts and have pride in seeing their creativity having an impact’.
