The local authority plans for a total of 37 brand new lorries to hit the roads between now and February 2025.
The council has already taken delivery of 17 of the new vehicles as part of the initial tendering process. A further 20, including two electric vehicles, will be brought into use over the next few months.
Cyril Anderson, Cabinet Member for Community in Swansea Council, said: ‘When we approved our annual budget earlier this year, we committed to investing more than £8m towards fleet replacement and I'm delighted this is now taking place.’
The council has also confirmed its plans to recruit 20 new waste and recycling collection staff.
Cllr Anderson said: ‘To make sure waste collections take place when they should, we often have to rely on external agency staff to cover our own council staff when they are ill or on holidays. Sometimes the shortage of these staff can lead to disruption in collections and has happened fairly recently.
‘The recruitment of 20 new staff to our collections team should give us more flexibility in terms of our ability to bring in staff at short notice and prevent household waste collections from being disrupted.’
