Backed by an investment of more than £16m, the council’s 34 buses now constitute the ‘UK’s largest zero emission hydrogen bus fleet’, delivering a ‘cleaner and greener’ transport service in partnership with operator Metrobus.

Alongside the 23 single decker buses that have been operating across the county since last autumn, the council has confirmed that 11 double decker buses have joined the service over the past few months.

According to the local authority, the single decker buses can run for 600 miles until they require refuelling, which can be completed in under 10 minutes.

Cllr Matt Furniss, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Economic Growth, emphasised the local authority’s commitment to providing ‘sustainable travel options’ for residents.

Cllr Furniss said: ‘I couldn’t be prouder that over half of the buses we have significantly invested in, make up the largest hydrogen bus fleet in the UK and the benefits this will bring for our residents.’

‘Our continuous investment in our bus network has contributed to almost 27 million bus passenger journeys made in Surrey last year. And over 14,500 residents aged 20 and under are benefitting from the Surrey LINK card which offers discounted bus travel around the county’, he added.
