More than 3,000 new electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints are to be installed across council areas in the Glasgow City Region.
The contract will facilitate the delivery of at least 3,000 charge points to council-owned car parks and on-street locations in the City Region’s eight local authority areas.
A statement published by Glasgow City Region reveals that a £3.6m investment has been provided by Transport Scotland to support the project, as well as confirming that the procurement process is predicted to involve a private sector Charge Point Operator being appointed for a 20-year period.
‘In addition to the new charge points, the existing network of 600+ local authority owned charge points will be migrated over to the new Charge Point Operator’, the statement reads.
The contract is designed to create a ‘nationally significant increase’ in EV chargepoints, while also increasing access to stations for those who cannot charge vehicles at home.
Susan Aitken, Glasgow City Region Cabinet Chair and Leader of Glasgow City Council said: ‘The demand for electric vehicles is going to dramatically increase over the coming years. We need to be ready to support that transition and the delivery of over 3000 new charge points across the City Region will do just that.
‘The City Region partners are delivering one of the most significant public EV charging projects in the UK, one which will make charging a car so much easier and accessible for the many thousands of residents who don’t have driveways and for whom owning an electric vehicle has perhaps not been an option.’
