Gary Lawson had celebrated his 40 years of service this year, after becoming part of the local authority in 1982.

At the annual Grit and Glory awards, the Gritter Driver of the Year title was presented to Mr Lawson, aged 62, for his ‘unwavering commitment to public safety’, as well as his ‘exceptional support for colleagues and communities’.

According to the council, Mr Lawson has been renowned for his highways expertise, technical knowledge and skill, adaptability, reliability, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

The council has also emphasised his passion for the job and his success in a mentorship role, during which he trained many new drivers throughout the county.

Cllr Tim McGuinness, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for rural, farming and transport, said: ‘Gary represents the very best of our winter maintenance service and the hard work and dedication that our staff bring to their roles. His commitment over 40 years is remarkable and his impact on colleagues, residents, and the wider community cannot be overstated.

‘I would like to congratulate Gary on this well-deserved recognition of everything he has contributed over the years. He embodies the resilience and enthusiasm we pride ourselves on at the council.’

With 5,000 hours having been dedicated to treating roads and footpaths in Durham this winter, the council has highlighted the hard work of the whole gritting team in consideration of Gary’s achievement.
