Worcestershire County Council has officially launched its winter gritting programme, ensuring the county's roads remain safe as temperatures drop.
With 36 gritting lorries and over 50 experienced drivers on standby, the council says it is prepared to treat priority routes promptly.
The fleet is equipped with advanced technology, including live tracking systems, to monitor operations and ensure efficiency.
Last year, the council’s gritting lorries – what it calls its ‘winter warriors’ – covered over 50,000 miles across the county’s roads.
In preparation for the colder months, the council has stocked 16,750 tonnes of salt across its depots, stored in large barns, ready for deployment as needed. This supply is constantly monitored and replenished throughout the winter period.
Additionally, more than 1,400 grit bins have been strategically placed around the county, stocked with a grit-and-salt mixture for public use, helping residents stay safe in their own neighbourhoods.
Chris Riley, Highways Maintenance Operations Manager at Worcestershire County Council said: ‘Our winter service team is primed and ready to jump into action the moment it's needed. I want to extend a huge thank you at the start of the programme to the entire team for their hard work in keeping our roads safe throughout the season.’
