Sunderland City Council has submitted a planning application to relocate and replace its existing Houghton depot at the Rainton Bridge Business Park.
The proposed facility would include offices, welfare facilities, workshops, storage, a garage for fleet vehicles—including road sweepers, tractors, grass cutters, trailers, and gritters—and a covered salt barn.
The new site aims to improve operational efficiency, offering better access to major roads and enabling quicker deployment of vehicles across local communities.
The council says the application will be assessed on its merits and in line with national and local planning policies, ensuring community and regulatory considerations are fully addressed.
