The Lancashire authority said the move was part of its ‘ongoing commitment to sustainability’. It said that when the vehicles are in use, they will have the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to diesel fuel.
The council’s portfolio holder for environmental services, Stewart Eaves, said: ‘We are thrilled to introduce these new eco-friendly vehicles to our fleet.
‘This helps us reduce our carbon footprint and supports our broader environmental goals.’
Views on the impact of HVO on the environment are mixed. As part of a cross-industry working group, the Environment Agency has commissioned a review into the possible use of HVO in its operations, and will consider its position once this is complete.
