Herefordshire’s first electric refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) will take to the roads this month.

The two new vehicles were bought under a new waste and recycling contract between Herefordshire Council and its partner FCC Environment.

The Dennis Eagle eCollects will operate in the area around a council depot.

They join 26 new diesel-powered RCVs, which range in size from 7.5 to 26 tonnes, which were added to the fleet recently to operate for the next eight years.

Cabinet member for environment Elissa Swinglehurst said: ‘These cutting edge vehicles are an exciting part of our new waste service.

‘The benefits they will bring to residents and those who visit the city include a reduction in air pollution including particulates and nitrogen oxide gases, and a reduction in noise pollution.’
