The fire occurred in Fengate on Monday morning and saw Peterborough’s Household Recycling Centre (HRC) closed temporarily.

A statement from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service confirms that the lorry was ‘well alight’ when crews arrived to extinguish the blaze.

A Peterborough City Council spokesperson said: ‘We do not yet know what caused the fire but there will be an investigation to establish this.

‘The safety of staff and users of the site will always be our first priority, so everyone was immediately evacuated from the building including some residents who were using the site. The HRC was closed for a period of time following the incident.’
