A large number of unattended vans and cars could be at risk from theft and vandalism during the coronavirus crisis, an association has warned.

Vehicle Remarketing Association (VRA) said the security of used vans and cars without access to formal storage facilities could be a growing problem for the remarketing sector.

Sam Watkins, chair of the VRA, said: ‘The problems are likely to arise in smaller locations that were never designed to be left unattended for long periods of time, notably dealer forecourts and ad hoc storage compounds. Vehicles are quite vulnerable in these circumstances.

’Especially, if the lockdown experience in the UK parallels that seen in other countries, there will be some non-compliance as the weeks pass and it seems sensible to assume that there will be people leaving their homes, some with criminal intent.”

The VRA said security and insurance are the two key aspects that need addressing.
