The naming competition took place at the school’s recent Fun Day, during which students were encouraged to suggest ‘imaginative and memorable names’ for the nine vehicles that help deliver the council’s winter road services.

Among the successful entries were Lord Coldemort, Melton John, Chilly Connolly, and Gritney Clears.

According to a statement published by the local authority on Tuesday, the vehicles are new additions to HOCHTIEF PPP Solutions’ fleet, which is used to manage the road network in the region as part of a partnership between HOCHTIEF and the council.

Cllr Helen Loughran, Convener of the Environment and Climate Change Committee, congratulated the pupils for the ‘fantastic names’ they put forward.

She added: ‘Throughout winter our gritting crews are ready to treat the road network when surface temperatures are expected to drop below freezing. They’re often out overnight to keep roads clear for the morning rush hour and, if it remains cold, they treat them again in the afternoon.

‘With our partner, HOCHTIEF, our roads team work to keep roads and pavements clear for residents and businesses to get to work, school and local services during severe weather.’
