To celebrate its 58-asset gritter fleet that covered more than 145,000 miles of road last year, the local authority has decided to involve members of the public in the revamp.

The council has asked local schools, readers of the Eastern Daily Press and Radio Norfolk listeners to propose new name suggestions for five of its gritters, which will join existing vehicles with titles such as Gritter Me Timbers and Lewice Hamilton.

Graham Plant, Norfolk County Council's cabinet member for highways, infrastructure and transport, reportedly said: ‘Our gritters – and the dedicated teams who operate them – are essential to keeping Norfolk safe and moving during the winter months.

‘We know how much people enjoy spotting our gritters out and about, especially when they’re sporting fun names so we’ve decided this year it’s time for a refresh.’

Mr Plant encouraged readers to use creative ideas in their suggestions, which can be submitted until October 24.
