The upgrade includes the introduction of 38 new purpose-built minibuses, which the local authority has described as ‘modern, efficient and accessible’.

According to the council, the fleet will provide school and college transport for pupils with additional needs, as well as supporting those using adult social care services.

Features of the minibuses include tail lifts and multi-fix flooring to adjust seating and wheelchair space, as well as tracking systems and in-vehicle recording.

Cllr Charles Whitford, lead member for highways and transport said: ‘This investment in our fleet means that reliable, accessible mini-buses are readily available for those who need them, enabling social connection and access to education and essential services.

‘Vehicles are modern and custom-built to suit the needs of passengers and drivers, meaning they’ll save the council money in the long-run and provide comfortable, accessible journeys.’

The exterior walls of the vehicles are also designed to include messages advertising the council’s search for ‘much-needed foster carers’.

Cllr Whitford added: ‘With more than 700 children currently in care in Leicestershire, we are always on the look-out for people to come forward and offer children safe and supportive homes – could that be you?’
