The Scottish authority began piloting an in-house bus service last January, initially buying and leasing 12 buses, with the aim of delivering passenger and school transport services at a lower cost than commercial contractors.

In their first year of operation, buses carried 449 pupils to school each day and a total of 52,046 public passengers.

The vehicles are also hired to twenty-four schools across the Inverness, Black Isle and Dingwall area to take pupils to trips and activities.

The council said the new arrivals would help provide more services amid high local demand.

Economy and infrastructure committee chair Ken Gowans said: ‘Our two new buses are already out on the road providing services.

‘This follows on the success of our in-house bus pilot project and the very positive reaction we have had from the public.

‘The project has always been about making financial savings, but also providing improved and more inclusive services for communities.’
