In a statement, the local authority urged residents to ‘get creative’ and take part in the naming competition, which opened on November 20.

Highlighting the existing monikers for fleet vehicles across the UK, such as ‘Gritty McGritface’, the local authority has encouraged residents to volunteer equally ‘witty, wintry and wonderful’ titles for its gritters.

Entries can be submitted via social media by commenting on the council’s posts, with the winning suggestions to be announced early this month.

Successful names will be ‘proudly displayed’ on the gritters in the council’s fleet, which is comprised of more than 13 vehicles and used to service 780 miles of roads in the area during the winter season.

Cllr Richard Herrett, Portfolio Holder for Destination, Leisure and Commercial Operations, said: ‘This is a great opportunity for residents to get involved and have a bit of fun while learning more about the vital work our gritting teams do.

‘It’s a light-hearted way to bring some cheer to the colder months and celebrate the hard work of our highways teams who often work around the clock to keep our roads clear and safe for residents in the icy conditions we can see through the winter. Plus, you’ll maybe see your chosen name rolling through the streets!’
