Glasgow City Council plans to spend £5.3m on 22 vehicles that are compliant with its low emission zone (LEZ) – almost a year after enforcement of the zone began.

A meeting of the council’s contract and property committee yesterday was recommended to approve the contract, which would see the refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) delivered over the next year.

According to a council report, limited availability of alternatively fuelled RVCs with space for four waste operatives led the authority to opt for diesel Euro 6 Emission Standard vehicles.

Although Glasgow’s LEZ was introduced in June 2023, it was reported last week that 534 of the 1,415 vehicles operating in the local authority are still not LEZ compliant.

Last year, the city council scrapped plans to buy 19 hydrogen powered trucks.
