Fire and rescue services in Shropshire spent the day tackling a large-scale fire at a landfill site in Telford.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service received a call at 4.44am for an incident at the Granville Recycling Plant, Grange Lane, Redhill.

Six fire engines were sent to the site where a large plume of smoke was found to be billowing into the sky.

Group manager Adam Matthews said this morning: ‘Crews are working hard to bring the fire under control which is of significant size covering a vast area over difficult and steep terrain. We’re likely to be here for some time dealing with it.’

Numerous vehicles were used to get the fire under control including two 4x4 incident support vehicles to help access the site, high capacity pumping units and the service’s incident command vehicle.

The Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service tweeted at lunchtime that the fire was almost extinguished.
