Three out of every four transport firms are now suffering from the nationwide driver shortage according to the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.

More than 100 companies, including Norbert Dentressangle, Marks & Spencer, Doddle, Mark Thompson Transport Ltd and Premier Foods, took part in a recent survey addressing the transport industry crisis.

Some of the key findings of the survey were:

• 74% stated that their organisation is experiencing a driver shortage

• 61% use agency workers regularly throughout the year

• 51% have failed to recruit drivers over the last 12 months

• The average age of drivers was revealed to be 47 years old

• 58% are not recruiting trainee drivers

• 22% do not finance Driver CPC

• 56% do not provide in-house training for goods vehicle licence acquisition

Among the reasons for the crisis, many of those surveyed cited that industry's image as a significant factor leading to the driver shortage.

And while 89% thought the Government was not doing enough to deal with the driver shortage, 80% thought it was the responsibility of businesses to find solutions to the issue.
