Smartwatches a hidden driver distraction risk, fleet firm warns

Employers could be overlooking a driver distraction risk created by smartwatches linked to workplace technology, a fleet management specialist has warned.

Fleet Operations says wearable tech should form part of organisations’ approach to managing distraction, particularly where watches are connected to company smartphones, work email and messaging apps. Messages, emails and calendar reminders can be delivered to a driver’s wrist, potentially diverting attention even when the phone is untouched.

Tony Greenidge, Head of Driver Risk Management at Fleet Operations, said most organisations have clear mobile phone policies, but ‘smartwatches can easily fall outside these controls’.

The company urges employers to review fleet and occupational road risk policies, consider disabling smartwatch notifications while driving, and set clear expectations for staff.

Department for Transport figures show mobile device use was a factor in 3.2% of fatal collisions in Great Britain in 2025.
