Fermanagh and Omagh celebrates major emissions cut from fleet

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has announced its success in reducing fleet emissions by 92% following a switch to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).

The council has revealed that in 2025-26, its fleet emissions totalled 86.96 tonnes of carbon dioxide, with scope one emissions having decreased considerably compared to the year before.

It has said that the use of HVO at both local authority depots has been the main reason for the reduction, with further progress having been made through its fleet electrification efforts.

The council’s aims to lower its fleet emissions are part of its net zero plans and its broader environmental goals.

A council spokesperson said: ‘The 92% reduction relates to the carbon savings associated with the use of HVO compared with conventional fossil diesel.

‘The transition to HVO forms part of the council’s wider commitment to reducing its environmental impact and supporting its climate and sustainability objectives towards achieving net zero.’
