Shetland Islands Council advances EV charging network strategy

Shetland Islands Council could benefit from nearly £500k to boost its electric vehicle (EV) charging network.

In a meeting on Monday, the local authority’s Environment and Transport Committee approved the council’s strategy and rationale for its business case to secure EV charging network funding.

The council could acquire £473,000 from Transport Scotland to help deliver its Plan for the Strategy and Expansion of the EV Charging Network, subject to the approval of its business case submission in May.

A progress report from the meeting explains that access to chargepoints is expected to be location specific. For example, ‘emergency workers operating from care homes compared with charge points located in school grounds’.

It also highlights its equalities impact assessment considerations, which entails that both public and fleet chargepoints will include accessibility requirements. This will apply to chargepoint design, as well as the charging bays’ layout.

A council spokesperson said: ‘In 2026/27 the spend is £8.9K for public charge points and £9.3K for the council’s own fleet charge points’.
