A new fleet of waste collection and street cleansing vehicles are to be rolled out across Harborough.
The new additions are to serve as substitutes for the district council’s current ‘ageing’ equipment that needs upgrading.
Backed by funding from the local authority’s capital programme, the move will support fleet reliability, safety, and service delivery, as well as alleviating maintenance demands.
The following vehicles will operate across essential environmental services, including waste collection and street cleansing:
- 1×18-tonne Rural RCV
- 6×26-tonne RCVs
- 1×26-tonne Trade Waste RCV
- 6×32-tonne RCVs
- 1 x Compact Mechanical Sweeper
- 1 x Chassis-mounted Large Mechanical Sweeper
- 1 x Large Mechanical Sweeper
Due to the district’s size, the council has explained that a fully electric fleet is ‘not currently a viable option for service delivery’ and confirmed that the new fleet will be diesel-powered to ensure cost-effectiveness and practicality.
But the vehicles will be installed with electric lifting equipment that reduces fuel consumption and boosts fuel efficiency.
After calling on residents to help name the RCVs, the local authority has announced that winning monikers include William the Woodpecker, Alfie the Adder, Hannah the Hedgehog and Barry the Bat.
Cllr David Page, Cabinet Lead for Neighbourhood Services, said: ‘Following a change of administration earlier this year, additional budget provision has been made to provide further investment into the fleet to fully meet the needs and priorities of neighbourhoods across the district.
‘This investment will support the continued delivery of these essential services and provide our operational teams with modern vehicles that are fit for purpose for many years to come.’
