Cumberland residents urged to ‘get thinking caps on’ to help name council gritters

Cumberland Council has called on residents to submit creative name suggestions for its five new gritters.

In a statement today, the local authority revealed that it is holding a competition to help name the vehicles, which will be added to a fleet consisting of gritters known as Ctrl SAlt Delete and Gritter Spitter.

The council has urged members of the community, including schools, to submit their ‘best, funniest and most imaginative names’ by November 13.

It highlighted the success of similar competitions in the past, with many of its existing vehicles having been named by residents whose submissions stood out among the rest.

Cllr Denise Rollo, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said: ‘Our gritter naming competitions have become a popular part of winter in Cumberland and always bring out some fantastic suggestions from residents.

‘While it’s a bit of fun, it’s also a great opportunity to recognise the hard work of our highways teams and gritter drivers, who work tirelessly throughout the winter to help keep our communities connected and our roads safe. We’re looking forward to seeing what creative names people come up with for our five newest gritters, so get your thinking caps on and send us your suggestions.’
