Wakefield Council decides to go diesel after EV trial failure

Wakefield Council has decided to replace its ageing fleet of bin lorries with new diesel vehicles after an electric vehicle trial concluded electrification was not practical for now.

The council began trialling the electric refuse collection vehicle four years ago as part of the shift towards net zero.

However, a Wakefield Council spokesperson said the trial showed that the electric bin lorries were ‘not practical for heavy-duty, stop-start urban routes.’

‘To ensure reliability we will be replacing our bin lorry fleet with new diesel vehicles for now,’ they added.

The spokesperson also said that there was insufficient charging infrastructure for a full fleet, but added that the council would ‘continue to expand its use of low-emission, smaller, and medium-sized electric vehicles.’
