Torridge District Council has appealed to members of the community to help name its 11 new recycling vehicles.
The lorries are due to arrive this summer and will be joining the local authority’s existing fleet of refuse vehicles that sport names including Bagatha Christie, Bindiana Jones, and Optimus Grime.
In a recent statement, the council has confirmed that the naming competition is the latest development of its recycling campaign, which aims to decrease the local authority’s carbon footprint.
The council has revealed that entries are open until the end of this month, as well as noting that a ‘touch of humour’ would ideally be used to inspire name suggestions.
While urging residents to be creative in their ideas, the council has issued a ‘polite reminder to refrain from any offensive or inappropriate names’.
Crews, supervisors, and waste and recycling service managers will be in responsible for selecting the winning names, with successful entrants being announced in July.
Cllr Chris Leather, Lead Member for Operational Services at Torridge Council, said: ‘This is a fun and creative way to celebrate the new fleet and to get the community involved in something they’ll see every week. We know how imaginative our residents are, and we can’t wait to see the fantastic names you come up with.
‘These recycling vehicles play a vital role in keeping our communities clean and sustainable. By giving them names, we hope residents, particularly children, will feel more connected to the service and the people behind it. It’s a great chance to engage, have a laugh, and be part of something meaningful.’
