An investigation has been carried out after refuse workers in Bristol rescued a man who had taken shelter in a waste container.
The incident involved a member of the public who had taken refuge in a waste container in the St Paul’s area of Bristol.
Crews noticed the individual during collection rounds and ensured that the truck’s machinery was stopped straight away, before calling emergency services to the scene.
After the individual was helped to safety from the vehicle, it was concluded that he did not suffer any obvious injuries, and he had turned down medical assessment from the ambulance service.
A spokesperson from Bristol Waste Company confirmed that the incident is being dealt with as a matter of ‘utmost seriousness’ and said a full investigation is being carried out to determine how it took place.
Ricky Gayfer, Director of Operations for Bristol Waste, said: ‘Health and safety is of utmost importance to Bristol Waste and all our people. The crews followed their training and procedures and acted quickly – it is thanks to them that this did not end in tragedy.
‘It is imperative that people do not seek shelter in bins, and we will be reaching out to relevant organisations in the city to help get this message out.’
