Reform UK council claims £6.2m saving by scrapping electric bin lorry plans

Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council says it has saved taxpayers more than £6.2m after scrapping plans for electric bin lorries inherited from the previous administration.

The newly elected Reform UK administration had already identified £2m in savings by cancelling the electric vehicle order. It has now revealed that a further £4.2m in charging infrastructure costs had not been budgeted for by the previous Labour-led council – money that would still have needed to be found had the electrification plan proceeded.

Council Leader Jonathan Gullis said the previous administration had been heading towards a multi-million-pound bill without accounting for the full costs, describing the scrapped plans as ‘costly net zero gimmicks.’
