Hackney goes green to help keep streets clean

Hackney Council has reduced the environmental impact of its road sweeping fleet as it introduces 20 greener vehicles from Scarab Sweepers.

Through its partnership with Scarab, the council has secured seven Merlin 62 truck-mounted sweepers, 12 RAVO R2 compact sweepers and one RAVO R1 sub-compact sweeper – all of which are powered by hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) rather than diesel.

Rolled out last month, the vehicles are responsible for delivering street cleaning services and maintaining roads, high streets, and residential areas across the borough.

The move is part of the local authority’s full fleet replacement project and will result in greenhouse gas emissions being reduced by up to 90%, supporting the council’s aims of creating a greener and more sustainable service.

It will also see that nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter levels are lowered, ensuring cleaner air and healthier communities.

Matthew Burdon, Scarab Sweepers Regional Sales Manager for London & the South East, said: ‘Hackney has been at the forefront of the industry as one of the earliest adopters of HVO fuel. By operating these brand-new sweepers on renewable fuel, residents can expect cleaner streets with a significantly reduced environmental impact.’
