Enfield Council has begun the recruitment process to hire 28 new members for its street cleansing teams.
The move comes after the end of a six-month funding period that subsidised the posts of 24 agency workers.
While a backbench councillor had suggested that the 24 staff members were dismissed by the council, the local authority has confirmed that the funding period had come to a planned end in June and said that no workers have been let go from core operations.
Funds from the council’s core budget will be used to recruit the new workers, with Cllr Maria Alexandrou, Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, commenting that the changes will deliver ‘a lasting and significant, positive effect on the borough’s environment’.
Cllr Alexandrou said: ‘We are absolutely focused on improving the cleanliness of Enfield for the long term, not with short-term fixes.
‘To that end, we are filling 28 vacant posts in the street cleansing team. At the same time, we are pursuing our proposals for weekly bin collections which we believe would have a dramatic, long-term impact on Enfield.’
