Herefordshire Council is urging residents to dispose of batteries safely after a lithium battery, wrongly thrown into household waste, caused a fire in one of the county’s bin lorries last week.
The crew spotted the fire while collecting on Crooked Well and Llewellin Road in Kington, safely emptying the vehicle before Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service put out the blaze. No one was hurt, but the council warned that items such as vapes, rechargeable batteries, phones and power banks can spark serious fires if crushed during collection.
Cabinet member Councillor Elissa Swinglehurst praised the crew’s quick response and urged residents to recycle batteries properly — in a clear bag placed on top of bins on collection day — to protect crews and keep services running safely.
