Denbighshire announces arrival of eight modern gritters

Denbighshire County Council has welcomed new fleet arrivals to support its winter service.

The eight new Econ Engineering Volvo vehicles have been acquired to replace the local authority’s existing gritters.

According to a statement from the council this week, its fleet is currently a decade old, with the old vehicles having reached the end of their operational lives.

The new additions will ensure the service is equipped with more modern technology to complete the work required during the winter season.

Included in the features of the new gritters is an intuitive in-cab display panel, supporting the efficient operation of the onboard de-icing materials during maintenance runs.

Driver training for the vehicles is scheduled to take place today and tomorrow, during which the gritters will be tested on the local gritting routes ahead of the winter season.

Winter maintenance work will see teams treat both small rural roads and Wales’ highest A Class Roads, as well as regional strategic routes, and involves the priority routes being split into nine sections across the country.

Cllr James Elson, lead member for Environment and Transport, said: ‘This investment to replace our aging gritting fleet is important to maintain our resilience to provide support to keep our region’s roads open for essential traffic and residents during periods of adverse winter weather.

‘This modern fleet provides a safer cab to work in for our drivers who work long hours, sometimes through the nights when the snow and ice hit the county.’
