Havering’s new weekly food waste collection service will now launch in Spring 2027, later than planned, after manufacturers said they cannot deliver the specialist vehicles needed until January 2027.
The delay stems from high demand nationally, as councils across the country race to roll out the same statutory service.
Havering has already ordered its vehicles and is securing caddies for residents. The council says Government funding for the scheme, a requirement under the Environment Act 2021, doesn’t cover full costs, and it remains unclear what funding will follow once the service is running.
Cabinet Member Cllr Martynas Cekavicius said: ‘Sadly, not enough thought has been put in place by the Government when passing new legislation and putting additional burdens on local authorities… We will start delivering the service as soon as we can get the right vehicles.’
