East Riding of Yorkshire Council has installed messaging on its refuse vehicles to raise awareness about domestic violence and abuse.
The council has used the advertising panels on five of its bin lorries, which will deliver services across East Riding and its rural areas, as victims could be more isolated in these regions.
According to the local authority, the panels signpost support services that help those affected by domestic violence and abuse and encourage people to seek help.
The move is designed to raise awareness about the support available to adults and children, as well as for people wanting to change their behaviours.
It is an extension of councils’ support for Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, which is being delivered under a theme titled ‘Spot the signs, start the conversation’ – aiming to highlight the important role that everyone can play in recognising abuse and helping those impacted by it.
Cllr Lyn Healing, East Riding of Yorkshire Council Cabinet Member for Communities and Public Protection, said: ‘It’s vital that we raise awareness of domestic abuse across our region through all available resources, including our bin lorries.
‘Nobody should suffer alone and the council’s DVAP website provides information and support. In urgent matters, where there is a belief of immediate danger, always call the police on 999.’
