A bin lorry driver has appeared in court charged with causing the death of an 11-year-old girl in a crash in the Scottish Borders.
Elizabeth Bell was struck by the vehicle on the A6105 near East Gordon on 31 January 2024 and was taken to the Royal Hospital for Children in Edinburgh with critical injuries. She died a week later.
David Maxwell, 35, from Galashiels, made no plea to a charge of causing death by dangerous driving when he appeared in private at Selkirk Sheriff Court. The case was continued for further examination and Maxwell was granted bail.
A spokesperson for the council said: ‘As Court proceedings are now underway, it would not be appropriate for Scottish Borders Council to make any comment at this time. SBC is cooperating fully with any relevant agencies.’
