Neath Port Talbot becomes first UK council with fully electric recycling fleet

Neath Port Talbot Council has become the first local authority in the UK to transition to a fully electric recycling fleet, with the first of 21 new vehicles arriving this summer, according to the council.

The new fleet will replace existing diesel vehicles and will be partly powered by on-site solar panels, improving air quality across the county. The vehicles also offer greater carrying capacity than their predecessors, helping the council continue to surpass the Welsh Government’s 70% minimum recycling target.

The first batch of 10 vehicles will be delivered later this summer, with the remainder arriving gradually throughout the year.

Cabinet Member for Streetscene Cllr Scott Jones said the council had worked proactively to reach the milestone, adding that the vehicles would improve air quality and reduce running costs, freeing up funds for other services.

He said the move backed up the council’s Climate Change emergency declaration and aligned with its Decarbonisation and Renewable Energy strategy.
