Southampton’s new fleet of food waste collection trucks is getting a colourful makeover – courtesy of local primary school children.
Hundreds of entries were submitted across the city before the Lord Mayor officially selected six winning names: Chompy Wompy, Binderella, Bin Appetit, FRED, Nomatron 3000 and Foody Trudy.
The competition was designed to get younger residents thinking about sustainability and recycling in a fun and accessible way, with council waste teams visiting schools to talk about the importance of food waste collection.
Lord Mayor Councillor James Baillie said the project had turned ‘essential work’ into something ‘the whole community can take pride in,’ adding that he hoped the conversations sparked in classrooms would turn into ‘lifelong habits.’
The winning names will be displayed on the sides of the vehicles in the coming weeks as they return to their usual routes across the city.
