Lorry down after floor burns in battery fire

A council refuse vehicle was declared out of action following a fire that burned a hole through the machinery.

The fire took place three weeks ago in a Norwich City Council bin lorry, with a battery having been confirmed as the cause of the blaze.

A hole had been burnt in the metal floor of the vehicle during the incident, and it was determined by a council spokesperson that the lorry would be out of action for a week.

Following the fire, a council spokesperson said: ‘A lithium battery disposed of in general waste caused a serious fire in one of our bin lorries.

‘Fortunately, no one was injured but the incident served as a reminder of the danger batteries can pose.’

They urged residents not to put batteries in their bins and to use the council’s kerbside electrical collection, a Recycling Centre, or supermarket battery recycling service to dispose of them properly.
