Names for Wokingham Borough Council’s new fleet vehicles have been selected from a pool of over 1,100 suggestions.
Following a public vote on the shortlisted names chosen by councillors, the local authority, and Biffa staff, eight names have been confirmed for the new waste collection and street cleansing vehicles.
More than 2,200 votes were cast by members of the public to help judge the ideas submitted by residents, schools and community groups, with the vehicles due to begin operating in June.
The winning entries for the refuse vehicles are as follows: Binderella, Binnie the Pooh, Trash Gordon, Obi Wan Binobi, Recyclosaurus Rex, and Bindiana Jones. The public also chose Sweeping Beauty and Shaun the Sweep as the names for the two sweepers.
Visits to the winning schools from the vehicles they named are due to be organised later this year and prizes will be presented to successful entrants.
According to the council, the new fleet will ensure service improvements and value for money for residents, as well as assisting in meeting the local authority’s climate targets through the vehicles’ reduced emissions.
Cllr Katrin Harding, executive member for environment and climate emergency, said: ‘The submissions were full of character and humour. The winning ideas show exactly why this borough is known for its creativity. We look forward to seeing the named vehicles on the road when the new fleet begins work in June.’
