A move could be on the cards for Thanet’s 113-asset fleet as the council anticipates the signing of a lease for a new vehicle base.
A budget of £1.3m has been recommended to fund the refurbishment of the site in Manston, as its current depot has been deemed outdated and ‘no longer fit for purpose’.
Cabinet members are due to discuss the proposals at a meeting on June 2, which will include recommendations to approve a transfer of £525k from the Manston Infrastructure Project to the Cleansing Services Building Works project budget to support the changes to the Spitfire Way workshop site.
According to a report, The Spitfire Way site had previously been used to maintain airport fire appliances, meaning it is ‘purpose built for HGV maintenance activities’.
The report adds that the site ‘offered an attractive solution as a long term replacement vehicle maintenance facility for the fleet’, as well as being larger than the council’s existing base.
Following the completion of work that will supply water, gas and electricity to the site, the council is expected to formally sign the lease in June, with procurement for a contractor due to take place that month.
