Council uses sweeper brush recycling scheme to support donkeys

A council has been donating used brushes from its road sweeper vehicles to a donkey sanctuary, where the animals are using them to scratch their coats.

East Devon District Council has confirmed that several of its used street sweeper brushes have been given to The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth.

Following a deep clean, the plastic bristled brushes are sent to the charity, which installs the brushes at various heights on the fence to enable the donkeys to reach itches more effectively.

While the animals receive regular grooming, the brushes provide additional support in helping donkeys shed their coats, according to Horse & Hound.

Cllr Geoff Jung, East Devon District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment – Operations, said: ‘This is a great example of reuse and recycling, and supporting a local charity.

‘It’s wonderful to see how the donkeys are benefitting from these old sweeper brushes, which would otherwise have gone to waste.’
