Nottingham City Council has approved the procurement of a new food waste disposal and treatment contract worth approximately £748,000, as it moves to bring commercial food waste collections in-house.
The five-year contract will be awarded through open tender, in line with the authority’s statutory duties as a unitary authority responsible for waste disposal.
A review of current arrangements found that the existing third-party provider charges for weekly collections that are unnecessary in some locations, making an in-house model more cost-effective.
Bringing collections in-house requires securing appropriate disposal outlets through a competitive tender process to maintain service continuity.
The move supports the council’s carbon neutrality commitments and aligns with the Government’s Simpler Recycling requirements, which mandate the separate collection of food waste from both commercial and domestic premises.
The authority holds a transitional agreement allowing it to defer domestic food waste collections until June 2030.
