Batteries are ‘no joke’, council warns

Stoke-on-Trent City Council has issued a grave statement to residents following a fire in a bin lorry.

The incident in Norton last week was caused by the disposal of a lithium battery, with the council reminding the public that these can be found in vapes, phones, laptops and e-scooters.

A statement on the local authority’s Facebook page confirms that there were no injuries during the blaze, as the bin crew was able to eject the load from the lorry and call the fire service to the scene.

In the social media post, the council said: ‘Lithium batteries are no joke – this is what happens when they are not recycled correctly.’

The local authority also urged residents to avoid discarding batteries in their general waste bins and advised how they can locate recycling points nearby.
