North Ayrshire Council has completed its annual winter dry run as it prepares for the colder months, following Cabinet approval of the Winter Service and Weather Emergencies Plan 2026/27.
The plan sets out how the council will respond to snow, ice, flooding and other severe weather. Salt stocks include 6,000 tonnes at Goldcraigs Depot and 2,400 tonnes on Arran, with levels monitored and replenished throughout winter.
The fleet comprises 14 gritters, supported by snow ploughs, tractors and specialist equipment, while 41 drivers and additional staff are on hand. Around 565 grit bins are also in place across the area.
Priority gritting routes, developed using thermal mapping, focus on strategic roads, bus routes and key transport links.
Cllr Eleanor Collier, Cabinet Member for Green Environment and Economy, said the dry run ensures ‘systems and routes in place and the teams are ready’.
