Gritting operations in Gateshead receive high-tech upgrade

Gateshead Council’s gritting service is to be enhanced by the introduction of five new weather sensors.

In a statement today, the council confirmed that the sensors will be used to monitor both surface and air temperatures at key locations in Gateshead.

The real-time information delivered to winter maintenance teams will assist their decision-making about when gritting is required, as well as supporting the targeted use of resources.

It will also help to provide a better understanding of local weather conditions, which the local authority has said can ‘vary significantly’ across urban, rural and higher ground areas.

According to the council, the investment is an element of its commitment to road safety in freezing temperatures, during which the local authority aims to keep traffic moving.

Cllr Garry Thompson, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: ‘Our teams work incredibly hard throughout the winter, often through the night and in very challenging conditions, to help keep roads safe and traffic moving across Gateshead.

‘This investment in new weather sensors will give us even better information about conditions in different parts of the borough, helping us make informed decisions and deliver the most effective gritting service possible. It is another example of our commitment to using the latest technology to support residents and keep our communities connected during the winter months.’
