East Lothian Council has received three nominations in this year’s APSE Service awards, with its Fleet Services team being one of the successful finalists.
The local authority has been selected as a finalist in the following three categories: Best Climate Action or Decarbonisation Initiative category, the Best Service Team of the Year (Technical Services) and Best Service Team of the Year (Cemetery and Crematorium).
It reflects the hard work of the council’s teams, with the awards being designed to ‘celebrate excellence in frontline service delivery’ across UK local authorities.
The council’s Fleet Services team has been nominated as a finalist in the Technical Services Team of the Year category, following achievements across various areas of its transport fleet.
According to a council statement, there has been a ‘major expansion’ of in‑house Additional Support Needs (ASN) transport, as well as investment in wheelchair‑accessible buses, workforce growth, and modern apprenticeships.
This has ensured ‘safer, more inclusive, lower‑carbon transport for over 40 additional ASN pupils’, the statement reveals. Furthermore, it has created average savings of £3,516 per user, in addition to improving local employment and skills sustainability.
The second and third nominations have been presented to the East Lothian Climate Forest programme (Best Climate Action or Decarbonisation Initiative category) and the Bereavement Team (Best Service Team of the Year – Cemetery and Crematorium category) – the winners of all three categories due to be announced in September.
Council Leader Norman Hampshire said: ‘All of these service areas are delivering initiatives that are making a real difference to our residents, our environment and our communities.
‘East Lothian would not be the wonderful place it is without the hard work of our council staff. Good luck to all our finalists!’
