Routine maintenance run results in gritter fire

A fire in a council gritter lorry resulted in the A361 near Glastonbury being closed.

The incident last Wednesday saw one of Somerset Council’s gritting vehicles catch fire during a routine maintenance run, with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service (DSFRS) being called to manage the blaze.

According to the council, the lorry had been taken out early that morning to ‘avoid the heat of the day during a day of extreme temperatures’.

Gritters had been used to dust roads across the country during last week’s heatwave, as road surfaces are at risk of melting in temperatures of 30 degrees or above.

A council spokesperson said: ‘The fire was dealt with promptly by the emergency services and the road was safely reopened later the same day.

‘The driver was unharmed and no other injuries were reported.’
