Basildon boasts three shortlists for fleet excellence awards

Basildon Council is in with a chance of winning three national awards for its waste and fleet services.

The local authority and its fleet contractor, NRG Riverside, have been selected as finalists in two categories at the Fleet Vision International Awards, which will take place tomorrow.

Awards that the council has been shortlisted for are:

  • Fleet Team of the Year – celebrates effecting partnership work, the ability to meet evolving legislative requirements, and ‘leading the adoption of new technologies’.
  • Most Innovative Fleet Management Strategy – recognises Basildon’s fleet electrification efforts and its rollout of the first fully electric food waste collection service in the UK before several other councils.

It has also been shortlisted in the Service Change at a Local Authority Level category at the Awards for Excellence in Recycling & Waste Management 2026 on May 13, in honour of the council’s in-cab technology project and broader progress in its digital transformation of waste and recycling services.

According to the council, the digitisation efforts have created savings of more than £200,000, as well as limiting missed collections, boosting compliance, reducing service request resolution times by 60%, and enhancing staff engagement.

James Hendry, Assistant Director for Environment, Climate Change and Open Spaces at Basildon Council, said: ‘Being shortlisted for these awards is a fantastic recognition of the dedication and innovation shown by our Waste and Recycling team and our partners. They have embraced new technology and ways of working to deliver real, measurable improvements for our residents.’

He highlighted the importance of ‘strong teamwork and a clear focus on outcomes’ as key to the council’s achievements.
