Middlesbrough Council has opened a £1.5 million extension to its Cargo Fleet depot, Resolution House, to keep its road maintenance and repair fleet in top condition ahead of winter.
Upgrades include a 17-metre inspection pit with built-in hydraulic play detection plates, a 32-tonne flush-mounted HGV ramp and a load-simulated HGV brake tester.
A new exhaust ventilation system will ensure compliance during extended diagnostic work, while new heating will keep the workshop comfortable through the colder months.
Mayor Chris Cooke and Cllr Peter Gavigan, Executive member for Environment & Sustainability, toured the facilities with Head of Highways Chris Bates.
‘It won’t look pristine for long, but it’s a hugely improved inspection resource for our hard-working fitters,’ said Cllr Gavigan.
‘They’ll be working with the same equipment or better than that used by DVSA, meaning the pubic can have full confidence in the inspection, maintenance and repair of the council’s fleet.’
Mayor Cooke added: ‘We expect our hard-working vehicles to be available around the clock, and ready to face the very worst the weather can throw at them.
‘They keep our roads clear and traffic flowing freely, but that requires them to be well maintained and repaired so this new workshop space is a welcome addition at this important site.’
